Limn
Limn is Bright Moment’s Artist in Residence Project for the month of January, 2023. It is a generative open edition collection that can only be minted IRL at the Bright Moments locations throughout January.
Inspiration
My sketchbook is always on my desk and serves as a constant source of inspiration for my creative process. When I begin a new project, I typically start by sketching out rough ideas and compositions in my sketchbook. I use this initial phase to experiment with different layouts and compositions, and to try out various techniques and approaches. My notebook has evolved into a type of creative journal over time, full of drawings, notes, and ideas that I’ve compiled. Flipping over its pages is a wonderful method for me to stimulate new ideas.
Relation
For Limn, I was particularly inspired by the organic, imperfect lines that come from drawing by hand. In traditional art forms, the hand-drawn aspect is an integral part of the art. The wobbles and rough edges that come from using a pencil or pen give the work a sense of personality. Moreover, I wanted to include the rough outlines around the circular shapes to show the organic and unique nature of each circle, instead of making them all perfect and uniform.
Features
Backdrop
There is an empty, void space behind the figures filled with a dark color. This feature, as the name suggests, acts like a curtain or backdrop, covering the void with colors from the palette. The parameters for the size of the backdrop are ‘Small’, ‘Medium’, ‘Large.’ Moreover, ‘Small’ reveals more of the void space and ‘Large’ making it less visible on the overall canvas.
Orbs
Orbs represent the organic circles filled with a color from the palette. The rough outlines around the circles depict the imperfect method of drawing circles by hand.
Palette
Finding the best suitable colors is a crucial step, and I spent quite some time experimenting with several different color combinations, analyzing how well they fit together, tweaking and adjusting as I find a satisfactory balance before settling on a palette. There are 24 color palettes in total, which were mainly inspired by nature and my traditional art journey. For example, one of the color palette’s name is ‘Terracotta’ which represents the clay art aspect in my traditional art journey, and others include ‘Sand’ and ‘Mint’ which are inspired by nature and its beauty.
Size
The ‘Size’ feature represents the size of the figures drawn on the canvas. It includes small, medium, and large.
Sketchy Arcs
The ‘Sketchy Arcs’ feature specifically represents the rough, circular outlines drawn all over the canvas that give the impression of a pencil sketch of imperfect circles.
Wobbly
‘Wobbly’ represents the shaky or uneven characteristic of the figures, adding an element of movement and energy. This also evokes a sense of hand-drawn imperfection. The parameters for this are None, Low, Medium, and High. These indicate the degree of variation in the height of the figures, where a low value corresponds to a minimal offset and a high value corresponds to a greater offset.
Wobbly Intensity
The ‘Wobbly Intensity’ feature represents the degree of variation in the distance between figures, with the parameters ‘Low,’ ‘Medium,’ and ‘High’ used to indicate the level of the spacing change.
